A prayer for your empty chair at Christmas —

By Becca Haines

Lord in Heaven,

As we celebrate your love and the birth of Jesus Christ in this joyous Christmas season, we come to you with everything on our hearts. There is peace and a deep sense of joy in the true meaning of Christmas, but we are also reminded this time of year of loved ones no longer sitting at our table.

We miss them. We miss their laughs, their smiles and their presence in our homes. We miss their influence and goodness and take comfort in knowing we’re better because of the ways you worked in their lives.

Our loved ones made powerful differences in our lives, and we’re thankful for the honor and joy it was to know and love them. We learned a lot from them and drew closer to you in the journey. For that, we are extremely grateful.

Let us honor their memory today with full and abundant lives in Christ our Savior. We feel the Holy Spirit joining us in our grief, but we know we don’t have to live in sorrow. Our loved ones are with you now. We’ll always remember the voice that is now singing in your Heavenly choir. Thank you for wiping away every tear and comforting every heart.

We praise you – merciful and loving Almighty God – in this merry Christmas.

Amen.
