Every time I stand in front of an obstacle course at “American Ninja Warrior,” I have nerves and worries – similar to how students might feel about sharing their stories of what God has done in their lives.
So how do I do overcome those doubts and fears?
1. I trust past experiences. I know that there have been those who have come before me and done it. Seeing somebody else do it before me or listening to an expert – trusting another person’s word has helped me a lot. It’s the same with my faith. I trust somebody coming alongside and saying, “I’ve been through that.”
2. I trust myself. I remember my training and my strength, and trust that I’ve practiced enough to conquer the obstacles.
3. I trust God. Whatever that feeling is like – whether it’s letting go or taking that first step – I have faith that I’m going to get through it. Ultimately I know and trust the fact that I’m not alone.
I go open-handed to the Lord with my ability and tell Him I’m going to turn it back to Him and let Him use it. I’ve had the opportunity to minister to literally thousands of kids using “American Ninja Warrior” – that’s the coolest thing because it’s something I least expected. Yet God is using it and that’s what He’ll do with anything if you just hand it over to Him. That’s why He gives us our abilities – to use for His glory.
Emily Durham, a contestant from the NBC show “American Ninja Warrior,” will deliver guidance on overcoming obstacles with important Biblical truths preteens can grasp on this year’s SuperStart tour. Her husband, Kevin, will also speak on this topic from his ministry “This Is My Story.”
