10 Things About ... Robert Watson —

By Becca Haines

CIY brings some of the most influential speakers from across the country to deliver Biblical truths to students. The “10 Things About” series offers a behind-the-scenes introduction into the lives of these talented youth ministry veterans.

Here are 10 things you need to know about Robert Watson.

1. He’s served Sun Valley Community Church in Arizona for 15 years and absolutely loves working with students.

2. He’s married to Lindsay and they have three children: Gabe, 11; Corban, 9, and Emma, 8. He said his kids make him laugh more than anyone else ... Not always on purpose.

3. He loves science. He studied Christian ministry and biology in college before ending up with a degree in sociology. He went to seminary for a master’s in church leadership, but was always intrigued by biology, physics and cosmology (not to be confused with cosmetology).

4. When he was a junior high student, he started learning magic tricks to “impress the ladies.” … It did not. But he would bring his case of magic tricks along on mission trips to Mexico where he performed shows in parks to gather a crowd of kids, and then his team would share the Gospel.

5. He’s a big fan of steak and sushi – not at the same time, though ... That would be ridiculous.

6. He is loving the current “Star Wars” saga and Marvel movies. He said Wonder Woman rescued the franchise, and he got choked up watching “Interstellar.”

7. When he was a junior high student his parents divorced, and his world was rocked. He said he tried “the rebellion thing” but then met Jesus through some friendships. Once he experienced the love of Jesus he knew he wanted to be a part of helping others experience the same thing. During an overnight youth event he made the commitment to be a Kingdom worker.

8. He said being a Kingdom worker means that his life belongs to the King. That means whatever gifts, abilities, influence and opportunities Jesus gives him, he will use them to love others and help them meet Jesus. He’s seen Jesus use all kinds of things to build His Kingdom through regular people … even magic tricks.

9. He said Elijah’s lifetime in the Bible contains many epic stories. What inspires him the most about Elijah is what James – the half-brother of Jesus – said about him almost 1,000 years later. Elijah was a guy just like us. What made Elijah so epic was not some superpower but rather a super-faith in the all-powerful God. This is the same God that we have connection to thanks to Jesus.

10. He plans to tell middle school students this summer that no matter who you are, what you have done or what has been done to you, God loves you and He has a purpose and plan for your life.
