Northern Ireland RIOT 1 Update 2

Posted: Friday, January 04, 2019

The goal today was pretty straightforward: Stay awake. A goal that, while certainly seems simple enough, would’ve definitely fallen flat had we ever stopped moving for more than about 10 minutes at a time. With this in mind, Richie kept us moving until about 9pm local time. We occupied our time by getting settled in to the guesthouse, walking around Newcastle and hanging out with some kids at the RIOT Youth Center. All of which gave us exciting glimpses into what lies ahead. But perhaps the most important stop of the day was the one we made just 40 minutes after landing in Dublin. That was our stop to see the High Crosses of Monasterboice. Their stunning detail, scale and preservation are why these 9th and 10th century stone sculptures are said to be Irelands most significant contribution to European sculpture. But that’s not why it was so important for the beginning of our trip. It was here that we saw simultaneously the depth of spiritual heritage engrained in this country, AS WELL AS the religious conflict that has long plagued her. One of our seven Missions Principles is that “Cultures are Beautiful and Broken”. Monasterboice offered us a glimpse of that truth which allowed us to focus our prayer as well as better understand that work that we get to be a part of on this trip. Please pray that we would all sleep well tonight, that God would continue His work of restoration here in Ireland, and that we would follow in boldness as the Holy Spirit leads us to be a part of it. Thank you so much for praying for us! Good night!  - Lane
