Northern Ireland 1 Update 3

Posted: Saturday, January 06, 2018

Today was an easy day. We drove into Belfast, about an hour away from where we are staying and spent the majority of the day in the city. We started by going to a market where several local shops were set up, selling a variety of goods from food, to clothes, to souvenirs, and anything in between. We had breakfast sandwiches from one of these shops and they were delicious. Afterward, we were taken around the city to several significant locations, starting with C.S. Lewis Square. The square, dedicated to the famous author, had sculptures of significant characters from the Chronicles of Narnia. After this we visited a Peace Wall, constructed during the riots that Northern Ireland experienced in its recent troubled past. We walked along the wall, reading the notes people inscribed expressing their desire for political peace between the two sides of the conflict. As we read and walked along the wall we prayed that God would bring peace to the country. We then were able to walk around the city, near the city hall, exploring shops, and even getting to see a view of the city from overhead in a center called Victoria’s Square. When we met back up we went to Ulster Museum and read a brief history of Ireland and Northern Ireland, learning more about the country’s turbulent history. As a team, we have been able to take in this new information together and hear answers from each other’s questions, helping us to more clearly see the need for the Gospel and the peace of Christ for other parts of the world that we may be less familiar with. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing what God will teach us about our own mission of communicating the Gospel and how we may be mutually encouraged with those doing the work in Northern Ireland. –Michael
