The second full day in Northern Ireland was nothing short of amazing.
The team started the day learning about the country's political history and "The Troubles," the label put on the century of wars and terrorism involving many groups, the most familiar of which for Americans would be the IRA. The troubles are rooted in religious tension between Catholics and Protestants, and though there have been 20 years of "peace," The Troubles continue to influence daily life for all Northern Irelanders.
For lunch the team was able to get one of the best meals in all of Ireland: Fish and Chips … and it was from one of the best restaurants in the entire country. It truly was an amazing meal … so, so good! Following lunch, the team went to Tollymore Forest, which was the inspiration for C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia." It's a place that our missionary partner, Richie Shilliday, calls a "Thin Place" - a rare place on earth that is unusually close to Heaven, so to speak. The peacefulness and beauty of the forest was indeed awe-inspiring. Each individual member of the team was able to spend an hour alone wandering the forest and spending time one-on-one with God. It was incredibly inspirational, and each member of the team has since commented that it was their favorite part of the trip so far.
Tomorrow the team will be working on sharing their testimonies and developing the best ways to share their stories so as to point others to the hope of Christ. There's supposed to be some bad weather over the next couple of days, which could limit the team to indoor activities. Please pray that God would allow for some great learning opportunities, and that we would all be present and ready to give an accounting of our faith at any time to the people we meet.
