Dominican Republic 1: Update 8

Building walls, playing with children, and Krispy Kreme donuts – just a few words to describe today's adventure. After a much shorter bus ride today we had the pleasure of visiting Bethesda (an orphanage for neglected youth from families with financial instability.) We loved hearing all of their future aspirations and hobbies. The song, “Ah Tooty Tah,” did not fail as a great ice-breaker for the language barrier. All of a sudden there were Uno rounds, hop scotch, coloring, and playing with the many activities we were able to smuggle into our suitcases for the trip. We had so much fun taking turns chiseling away at exterior beams of the orphanage before building up a wall to form an office and larger pantry area. I loved seeing the team come together as the body of Christ when we formed an assembly line to move the cement blocks across the courtyard. We are able to look at the pile of bricks and know that each of us had assisted in moving each brick. At the end of the day our dreams come true when we finally received the gift of Krispy Kreme donuts after driving by the store twice a day, every day. We ended the night with a great time of worship after debrief. We were also treated with hearing the life story of our leader, Wendy. Many questions were asked about life, marriage, and pursuing Christ. Unfortunately, our time is drawing close to an end, but we are trying not to talk about it.
